Damn it's quiet everywhere. Nothing's happening. A lot of
people have vanished already to their christmas holidays or
then they are just hiding somewhere. Anyway, this time we
have an interview with five TPOLM fellows called Fthr,
Crkr, MD, Raven and Frank Bolero. Or should I call it a
      chat instead, perhaps.

Oh, I almost forgot: Happy birthday, Filipe! (PS turned 20
      today.)

This week! I've been mostly drinking tea.

=====! interview !=============================================================

      Session Start: Sat Dec 18 19:18:47 1999
      *** Now talking in #demojournal
      *** reiska has joined #demojournal
      *** fthr has joined #demojournal

<melw> hi fellows. tell first something about yourselves.

<fthr> ohh please can't you translate this from finnish :)

<melw> no. i'm too lazy for that. :)

<fthr> nah okay. well today, i'm wearing gray socks, black pants and
             am listening to plaid: 333

      <melw> plaid: 333? what's that?

      <fthr> it's plaid's 1st (?) album. and it's quite lovely indeed

<melw> hmm. perhaps i should try it.

      <reiska> never listened to plaid

<fthr> huh you gotta hear this and the 2nd album too

      <reiska> i should

<fthr> ohh jaakko sent an sms

<reiska> ask jaakko to come here maybe

<fthr> irc or your place? :)

      <reiska> irc :)

<fthr> hold on a sec. i'll call him...
okay. jaakko is HUng over. but he's coming on irc maybe

<melw> hmm. i feel this interview is already slipping out of my
             hands... :)

<reiska> well the last interview was something totally unbelievable

<melw> what was the last interview you were, then?

<reiska> mm don't remember. antti might. i guess it never came out
               due to explicit content

<fthr> the last interview .. was done by phoenix andy. for some
phoenix andy project. his name WAS andy right? :) where is
he nowadays? i hate it when people quit their irc habit

okay reiska tell something about yourself, i gotta go get tea

<reiska> yeaa well i'm a hardworking game programmer really

      *** mdc8 has joined #demojournal

      <mdc8> le jou

<melw> well hello there! having a bad hang over? :)

<mdc8> not very bad anymore.. i couldn't move from bed before 5 pm
             though. :)

*** mdc8 is now known as _md

<reiska> we're all skid row alcoholics as you see.

      *** fBolero has joined #demojournal

      <fBolero> hey there

      <fthr> hey frank b !

<melw> okay. fthr is listening to plaid, reiska is working hard, what
             about you md?

<_md> melw i am recovering from last night's superb party
partying for reiska's leaving helsinki and veikka (sulphur/orange)
coming back from london. there were millions of people. :)

<melw> well that must've been quite a party if you're still feeling
             bad. :)

<reiska> too bad i missed the annankadun kommuni part of it

<fthr> mm we went to kOffice after that

<_md> reiska why did you miss it anyway

      <reiska> md that girlie thing

<fthr> and just why are you leaving helsinki

      <reiska> stupid finnish army

      * melw is considering about how he could get this "interview" back
        on the trails...

<fBolero> reiska :enlighten me on the girl thing
oh .. the interview.. yes :)

<fthr> melw don't worry, in the last interview we only talked about
             hash and beastie boys

<melw> well, that doesn't sound too bad option for me. beastie boys
             rocks!

      <reiska> so does hash

<fBolero> i think we should talk about "julmust" :)

      <fthr> julmust?

<fthr> julmust is that swedish softdrik?

<melw> oh yes. julmust is (at least if i'm correct) a swedish xmas
             lemonade.

<fBolero> yes. a sweish christmas beverage.. aged in wooden barrels

      <fthr> yup it's great

<fBolero> i love it. im drinking julmust right here

<melw> dark and sweet. much better than anykinda coca cola

<fBolero> well. one should never underestimate the powers of the dark
                gold, a.k.a. Coca Cola

<reiska> i prefer beer. and gintonic

<melw> i agree with reiska (with that beer part).

<fBolero> i prefer Kaprinias or Kaprinuskis if it comes to drinks
                or Malt Whiskey like Glenmorangie

      <fthr> whiskey! where's mikko btw :)

<reiska> i hear nothing but the sound of drinks

<_md> euch whiskey or cognac don't work for me

<melw> btw. none of you attended to demojournal beer gallup few
issues ago, so now you all must tell me your favourite beer
             flavours.

      <_md> beer brands?

      <melw> yep.

      <reiska> karhu is nice

      <fBolero> i don't druink beer.. i can't stand it really :/

<_md> dark velkopopovicky. my absolute fave

<reiska> legenda is very good too

      <fthr> yup agreeing with md

<melw> md, oh. but yes. dark velkopopovicky. absolutely something.

<reiska> and those german white beers

<fBolero> melw: if you definitely need a brand, then Corona

<fthr> chocolate stout was also nice :)

<melw> wait a sec, i'll get a cup of tea for myself.

      <_md> good idea

<fBolero> melw what tea are you drinking?

<melw> this is 'keisarin morsian'.. hmm, what's that in english?
             [editor: 'emperor's bride', i think]

<fthr> reiska is an expert on tea btw

<reiska> mm i could make tea too. i am the tea professionalist
               artiste ekstraordinaire.

<fBolero> i have some green tea, pretty "smoky" taste here which i
love but i can't remember the name of it

<reiska> i code no more, just drink tea

<melw> does anyone of you want to talk about demoscene?

      <fBolero> sure

      <reiska> why not. it's a nice word

<fthr> rolls out the tongue nicely

<melw> so what's tpolm doing right now?

<fthr> preparing to go to phinland rephlex party

      *** Antibyte has joined #demojournal

      <reiska> and who's that

      <fthr> antibyte?

      <_md> ahaha antibyte. antibyte/scx?

      <fBolero> scoopex?

      <Antibyte> Hi.

<melw> this channel is getting a way too crowded.
antibyte, sorry but were doing an interview here..

<_md> use your power as operator

      <fthr> antibyte/scx joined tpolm

      <Antibyte> okay. bye.

*** Antibyte has quit IRC (Client exiting)

<fthr> we're starting to do winning amiga demos

<_md> we're also working on a few things for the playstation 2

<reiska> yeah i've been learning to code amigaeffect for the past
               half a year.

<fBolero> im making music all the time

<melw> are you doing anything for denmark, now?

      <fthr> on the record, no
             off the record, yes

<reiska> on the record, i'll make tea now

<fthr> i'm going to denmark anyway

<melw> a lot of people are going to denmark anyway.

      <fBolero> what's with denmark?

      <fthr> the party 9

      <fBolero> aah!

<melw> what will happen on the year 7000?

<fBolero> we will all join in love and harmony

<fthr> yess. wish you could be here

<reiska> too bad i'll be spending half of the year 7000 with the
               finnish army

<_md> i am totally digging to this jam. it's a very housey bit now
            groovy as my shit

      <fthr> funkier than your mother

<melw> md, what are you listening to?

      <_md> melw, bstates * 2 + pauli + md jam

<melw> what about your other future plans? what other will happen
in 7000 than joining love and harmony?

      <reiska> we'll irc

<_md> the world will unite. once and forever

      <fthr> haha we'll irc :D

      *** _jaska has joined #demojournal

<melw> jaska, good evening to you, too.

<fthr> now playing: bill yard - inte nge namn n

<_md> bolero you should put together an mp3 album. or real cd

<fBolero> _md: yeah.. i've been thinking of something like that

<melw> fbolero, do you have any of your songs in public so that
             just anyone could download it?

<fBolero> melw: ppl can go to www.frankandbill.scene.org for now..
                it's very rough and unfinished

      <fthr> hey jaska say mursu!

      <_jaska> mursu

<melw> okay. i'll ask about some of favourites.
what's the best movie what's been on the cinema this year?

      <fthr> easy rider

      <reiska> calamari union

<fBolero> melv: i haven't been on any good cinemas this year :/

<melw> fbolero, you havenn't? well, you have still about two weeks
             time left..

<_md> roberto benigni: la vita e bella. fantastic movie

<reiska> oh jeah. that was soo great

      <fthr> yeah that was excellent

<melw> what about music? what's worth of listening from those what've
             been released this year?

      <fthr> squarepusher: selection sixteen

      <reiska> that new stereolab

      <fthr> plaid: restproof clockwork

      <reiska> air's single compilation

      <fthr> lackluster pieksamki sessions

<fBolero> Esbjrn Svensson Trio "From gagarin's Point Of View"

      <reiska> angelit : mannu

      <_jaska> mursu

      <_md> autechre ep7.
and i concur with everything that was said above.. all very
            good cd's

<melw> jaska, you can something else too, if you want to. :)

<_jaska> melw you have to ask good question first

<melw> jaska, tell me what is a good question.

      <_jaska> melw i don't have to. that's not my job, it's yours

<fthr> hey i should be going. it's 8.30. if i want to make it to the
             party

      <_md> come here

      <reiska> jaakko i'll come

<fBolero> enjoy the party guys. i'll just sit here in my apartment :)

<fthr> fB would you finish the interview then ? :D

<melw> ok. seems like you're splitting up now. any final words and
             blahblah's?

      <reiska> sarsaparilla

<fthr> respect to halme & mr dollaz

      <_md> bacon, lettuce, and tomato

<fBolero> everyone should think about the weather and start looking
around themselves. see what surrounds them instead of just
concentrating on actions and what exactly they need to do
(i.e. go from one point ot another in order to finish
something).. take a minute or two just to think about the
wonders and magic of the surroundings. mountains, animals,
                people, sky, earth

      <_md> word bolero!

<melw> are you all going now?

<_md> fthr is, reiska is, i am

<fthr> so jaska & frankb will hopefully cover if you need more stuff :)
ok that says it, i'm gone

*** fthr has quit IRC (Leaving)

<_md> love and kisses to all planets

*** _md has quit IRC (Leaving)

<melw> well, perhaps i'll figure some good question to jaska then,
             before we quit.

<fBolero> melw: ppl should be more careful about their friends. think
a minute or two about how much they need them and so on

<melw> fbolero, i agree. friends are important.

      <fBolero> very true

<melw> if you had a possibility to make world a better place somehow,
             what would you change?

<_jaska> no more stupid people. if you know what i mean

      <fBolero> only happy pirates :)

<melw> well, the difference between stupid and not-stupid people is
hard to make, but i think i understand.

      <_jaska> i don't mean IQ

<melw> me neither. IQ is something that should not be cared about.
i guess there quite many 'stupid' people in some mensa
             organisation, too.

      <fBolero> EQ is more important

      <_jaska> very important indeed

<melw> what are the most important things in life, then?

      <_jaska> mixing
               art

      <fBolero> love
                and the caring of others
                music
                art

<melw> okay. but anyway this interview turned out quite weird,
perhaps it's time to stop this now.

=====! demo !==================================================================

      Inside by CNCD (final version)

      Found at www.hornet.org
      1st place at the Gathering'96

      System requirements:
3MB HD, "Fast pentium", 5.5 MB RAM "so go kill that smartdrive" :)
Sound: a separate setup-prog for the sound is included.
Running in Win'9x throws the musicplayer out of sync, and the whole
demo runs at a quarter of the normal speed.

      Random thoughts:
Ah, it's that time of the year again: almost winter, it's cold
outside and it gets dark soon. One would expect that, during those
longer nights, coders have plenty of time to code zillion demos, but
alas: the opposite is true. Scene activity is low, demo-parties are
scarce, and everyone is waiting for TP9 (probably the last major scene
event before our beloved machines all commit suicide and we are thrown
back to 1900 :)). So in the meantime, I'll have to review some quality
oldies. Today on editor's request: CNCD!

Second point I've to make: the university closes down for 1, maybe 2
weeks during Christmas holidays. I don't mind that :), but my net
access will be shut down as well :(. So this section will be empty,
unless someone jumps in, maybe with a nice review of some 3D-
accelerated demo that I can't watch. (Santa Claus, remember: Riva
TNT2 Ultra with lots of mem! You better do not forget it again, buddy!)

      The demo:
The first time I watched this was on my rusty 486, and it was, ahem,
not exactly fluid. But now I can enjoy the full framerate! It starts
with a black screen, on which little spots appear that grow larger
to reveal a picture: a weird background with a naked body and a
tube "Amazing coop". It reminds me of soap-commercials :). Next a
CNNNCD/INSIDE logo pops up, in a psychedelic color-mix that is used
all through the demo. The credits are shown while we fly in a tunnel,
following a trail of lights that are emitted by a metal-shaded virus.

Some effects come back several times in the demo: a morphing flower
with "gliding" textures in a very good fractal-textured tunnel,
pictures of rappers that cast shadows on the floor of the 3D-rooms,
and the double-plasma backgrounds. The 3D-side is not spectacular
anymore, as everyone is used to complete 3D-worlds, but back then
the 3 spaceships flying over the mountains, and the flares inside a
mirroring room were probably pretty cool. And the water-effect cause
by the fish looks still OK. The music is an 4-channel edit of the
"eyegaboom"-tune, very rhythmical with only one lonely voice-sample
("niggah!"). Most of the flashes and changes of parts are synced,
but at the end I've a black screen for a few seconds, which might
be due to the demo waiting for the music to finish.

      Worth the download ?
Hey! This is a classic! You're not a true scener if you haven't seen
it (plus Second Reality etc :)). Ok, more seriously: the effects of
Inside might be outdated, but the style never will. The music and
the design are great, and newbies should take a look at it to see
how much you can do with 4-channel music and 256 colors. Yes, I was
doubting for quite some time whether it was 8 or 16-bit color, but
now I'm 80% sure they used an algo to recalc the palette for every
frame. Such code is useless with the hi-color modes of today, but
the fact I was unsure shows how worthwhile it was to make it. Respect!

                                                                        Seven

=====! intro !=================================================================

      1992
      by Eclipse
      64 kilobytes intro
      released at LTP3
      2nd place out of 4

      Download:
      ftp://ftp.scene.hu/.1/DEMO.'99/LTP.'99/64k/e_1992.zip

As there are no new releases around, I decided to go back a
bit to LTP3, which was held in August 1999 in France. All
entries in the 64k intro compo worth at least a watch.

This one has a title of a number, like 69 by TBL in the
previous Demojournal - but it does not mean that from now on I
will only review such intros :) It happened this way by
      accident, really.

This intro was created by Eclipse. This group has been quite
well known on the scene a few years ago (for example, for
their DOS extender called Eclipse OS), but then they moved on
to the game industry. It seems this time they had some time to
      come back.

The intro is in the so-called oldschool style. This term is
nowadays used for scene releases imitating the "good old ones"
      - those which were made back in, say, 1992... Of course, this
means chip music, pixel graphics, and those old effects.

As a joke, everything in this intro is made as if it was
released in 1992; the authors are announced as "Eclipse
Cracking Force", the party is called "LTP3, held in 1992", and
      so on.

The intro starts as if it was a cracktro for a game, as the
displayed texts indicate. A starfield effect is in the
background. Then the chiptune starts, and there is an effect
with a bouncing ball and some stars inside it. Next is an
effect with a 3d rotating cube made up of pixels, with a small
nice picture of a smiling star in the corner of the screen.
The next effect is a zoom-rotator. The texture is a very good
      pixel-picture of a teddy bear.

This is the end of the intro, which was quite short, actually.
The end part is a wormhole, the predessor of the tunnel
effect; and they are not only similar in outlook, but both are
considered to be extra boring :) This time it is fun to watch
it anyway. The credits and greetings are displayed meanwhile.

Although I'm sorry that it is so short, I like this intro. But
it is a very subjective to rate this kind of stuff. As this is
"oldschool", it makes people remember the old releases. It
probably does not mean much to those who don't know them...

                                                               Gekko

      "Luv u", "in the shadow"
      Falcon, Mad-e
      tdr #144,143

"tdr goes triphop" with these two releases. I guess I don't have
to comment a new release by Falcon and i think that review of song
      by mad-e is more important.
His fourth track is triphop again, but this time more influenced
by Falcon. It is exactly in between of the classical triphop tunes,
mostly by it's structure and some instruments, and Falcon's weird
pieces which reflect in the strong basslines, strange accompanying
sounds and unexpected lead changes. This music isn't easy listening
and it is much harder to describe. You have to hear it. It is his
best tdr release and if you are into triphop you shouldn't miss any
      of the songs.

      Return to stage 9
      various artists
      www.polpo.org/rts9

I think that no one has expected that gigantic musicdisk. I guess
we should rather call it a group with guest releases only, because
some of the groups haven't released that much material. After
hearing music from this musicdisk I understand why some groups had
worse production than in previous years - their members have
dedicated their best songs to this disk. ...blahblahblah....
just get it, because a lot of artists have really released their
best songs through this musicdisk (this is very significant by KFMF
members like Andromeda or Wayfinder "cpu killer"), the rest of the
songs are above average and they are worth listening. But also don't
forget that the silence is the biggest inspiration and Christmas is
the right time to take a break.

      Smile :)
      Melwyn :p
      scene.org
      juhla5 winner

Because melwyn wasn't able to write my name correctly in the last
issue, I've decided to review a track by him. Unfortunately I had
only this one, and I'm afraid that it is too good for a revenge.
It opens with atmospheric sounds and a simple melody played on
a guitar. Into it comes a flute that plays in a style very similar
to Scorpik. When the flute finishes, we get to the main theme of the
song, which contains very good vocals. They are accompanied by
necessary instruments only, so the tune sounds smooth. Only the
guitar sound could be richer and it would need also a bit more
variation, but because I was too lazy to get final version, I
      guess I shouldn't complain.
It isn't a kind of tune you would play to your friends as a
presentation of the scene, but it is enjoyable song.

In the time you're reading this article I'm already on holidays
so I wish you the best Christmas, happy new year and for the case,
that would be the end of the world, don't be too drunk. :)

                                                                  tryhuk

Sexy is something we cannot see or touch and that makes us
